Day 2: Phra Judhadhut Palace……..Accepting I have not made it to heaven, or at least not just yet, I wake late and update my notes. It’s after 11 am before I venture out. Many of the attractions listed on the tourist map are concentrated around Phra Judhadhut Palace further down the coast mostly dating from the late 19th century in the reign of Rama V. The Palace is surrounded by beautiful terraced gardens, ponds, streams, fountains caves and cliffs which follow western design.
I don’t intend to cover the various historical places within the Palace site in any detail here. The historical information is included in my Tours pages and some additional information appears as tags in my photo gallery. The site map lists the following:-
Sri Chalothornthep Shrine, Asdang Bridge, Phrathinang Manthatratanarot, Wang Cape, Ruen Mai Rim Talay, Na Wang Beach, Ma Kham Hill, H.M. Chulalongkorn Memorial, Ruen Vadhana (Wattana), Maha Nodadt Well, Ruen Phongsri (Phongsi), Ruen Adhirom (Apirom), Wat Asdangkhanimtr, Sri Maha Bhodi Tree, Khao Noi Viewpoint, Julawan Garden, Thepnanda Well, Asdang Well, Pra Phat Choniathan Well, Machimwan Garden, Su Pong Prung Stream.
As a visitor attraction the Palace should not be underestimated. There are a number of routes though the complex with the longest listed as 90 minutes. To do this site justice and allow sufficient rest time I would suggest 2 hours are needed. Today entry to the Palace is FREE: Its Tuesday the day King Rama V was born which may explain that. The palace is closed on Mondays. On exit there is marine research facility with a visitor centre for those interested. I’m heading for Haad Tham Phang for lunch, the only real beach on Koh Si Chang.
Day 2: Haad Tham Phang and south island……..Situated on the west coast, Tham Phang beach offers the customer deckchairs with umbrella: No charge for use if ordering food or drink. While the drinks are more expensive than on the east coast the seafood is most reasonable. I see out the afternoon taking advantage of the warm shallow waters in the bay. Haad Tham Phang is worth a visit but will never appear on any chart for cleanest beach in Thailand. The proximity to a congested shipping route sees to that. (cont. on page 4)
