Koh Si Chang: unlikely destination. Page (1) | (2) | (3) | (4)

Day 1: Stairway to heaven!……..My original intention was to rent the motorbike on the second day of my visit but without further ado I’m off to explore the island just two hours after leaving Si Racha. It’s soon clear that there is more here than meets the eye. Arriving at Tha Lang Pier one the most prominent features on the island comes into view to the right at the base of Mount Kayasira. The Chinese temple was built at the site of a former shrine Saan Chao Paw Kao Yai inset in a rock cavity. To reach the temple complex there is a bordered staircase reminiscent of Doi Suthep in Chaing Mai but the less able can use a cable railway carriage to reach the complex. I use the stairs to and am treated to excellent views of the town below. After a visit to the shrine there is another port of call, this time it’s a ‘stairway to heaven’. Before the settlement was here King Rama V brought in from Buddhagaya in India a sacred stone which was made into The Buddha’s Footprint. Two concrete staircases rise one from the temple and one from the service road below. I start the climb up the hill below Mt Kayasira. A sign board points to the summit. I hold my breath; this is no going to be easy. On the way up a sign in Thai offers encouragement….you will soon be in heaven! There are two ways of interpreting this but as a reach the 268 metre shoulder of Koh Si Chang’s highest peak I’m really glad I made the effort. It really does feel like heaven. From the summit practically the whole island is visible. Of course there is another way to gain the summit of Mount Kayasira but then you wouldn’t get to heaven! A new access road has been built: I could have made the accent on the motorbike!
Day 1: Heading back……..I’ve already surpassed my expectations for today; it’s now 5.30pm. However the return journey takes me past the viewpoint Chong Kao Khad. Just can’t resist the sunset. Wonderful! Back to Benjaporn and prepare for diner. This accommodation is roughly half way down the eastern coast of Koh Si Chang within easy access to the town on the north end of the island and the restaurant strip along the road to the south. A Korea BBQ and a beer completes this interesting day.
