Chiang Rai Province

Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand. It is bordered by the Shan State of Myanmar to the north, Bokeo Province of Laos to the east, Phayao to the south, Lampang to the southwest, and Chiang Mai to the west.

Geography: The average elevation of the province is 580 metres (1,900 ft). The north of the province is part of the so-called Golden Triangle, Today plantations of tea coffee and fruit have essentially replaced opium fields and the drug smuggling trade across the borders. The Mekong River forms the boundary with Laos, the Mae Sai and Ruak River with Burma while the Kok River flows through Chiang Rai.
The eastern part of the province is characterized by relatively flat river plains but to the north and west are the Thai highlands consisting of the Khun Tan Range and the Phi Pan Nam Range in the west and the Daen Lao Range in the north. Doi Tung ("flag hill") is the most recognisable terrain feature with an ancient mountain-top temple, Wat Phra That Doi Tung temple Nearby is the Doi Tung royal villa, former residence of the late princess mother (mother of the present king) Somdej Phra Srinagarindra who was instrumental in illuminating opium production in the area.

History: There have been settlements in the province since 7th century most notably around the town of Chiang Saen and then became the centre of the Lanna Kingdom during the 13th century when the city of Chiang Rai was founded by King Mengrai but was occupied by the Burmese in the late 16th century until 1786. Chiang Rai became a province in 1910, after being part of the Lanna Kingdom for centuries. After Lanna was incorporated into Thailand, it remained an autonomous region administered from Chiang Mai.
Chiang Rai Province is a transit point for Rohingya refugees from Myanmar (Burma) who are transported there from Sangkhlaburi district in Kanchanaburi Province.

Tourism: With the opening of the international airport it is now much easier to reach this once remote province. Popular attractions include the Golden Triangle and Mae Fa Lung Gardens, the area around Doi Tung is a natural treasure. Notably in and around Chiang Rai is Wat Phra Kaew where the emerald Buddha was found and the iconic Wat Rong Khun (White Temple). Singha Park is also well worth a visit. Further afield there are extensive ancient ruins at Chiang Sean.
