An alternate name for Stupa. Thai Stupas are generally referred to as Chedis and are of distinctive design with bell shaped domes capped by tapered spires. However they perform a similar function.
Mondrop........
A religious building with rectangular roof usually enshrining a Buddhist relic or image.
Phra........
A term of reverence implying high status. Used commonly as part of the name of a religious site and indicting its origin.
Prang........(left)
A tall finger-like spire usually richly carved. Common in Khmer religious architecture, the design was later adopted by Thai Kings of Ayutthaya and Bangkok appearing on only the most important religious buildings.
Stupa........
A Buddhist religious monument. Original designs were domed, of basic material and used to house relics and remains. Later more elaborate versions performed a similar function but were also built to house religious objects or to commemorate a significant event or simply as symbols of faith.
Viharn........
Also known as Wihan, Vihara or Vihear. In Thailand and China Viharn specifically refers to an enclosure for a Buddhist relic or image. It is perhaps best described as a shrine hall.
Wat........
General term for Buddhist temple whether ancient or modern as a place of worship. Used as the first word in the temple name.
