Kanlisirt Monolith, Sari Bair Ridge,
Eceabat District, Çanakkale Province

Meaning 'Bloody Ridge', this location was christened by Turkish soldiers who sustained many casualties in May 1915. The inscription reads, 'In order to help the British 9th Army Corps landing at Anafarta district (Suvla Bay) on 6-7 August 1915, the Anzac force attacked the Turkish 19th and 16th Divisions, who were defending the Aniburnu front, to hold them here. The unit of the 16th Division, in spite of their losses are 1,520 martyrs and 4,750 wounded during the extremely violent fighting, heroically defended Kanlisirt.'
