Museum of Petrified Wood, Ampoe Mueang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province

The Museum of Petrified Wood is one part of the Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood & Mineral Resources, Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University. It is one of just a handful of research institutes in the world dedicated to the study of petrified wood. The museum is designed to be fun as well as educate. Visual displays, exhibits and videos draw you in to the circumstances and chemical processes involved in converting organic material into stone through mineral infusion. You soon learn that the chemical processes only occur under certain conditions and in certain locations. The surrounding area is one of these locations. In recognition of this and other geological and historic studies, UNESCO has declared five districts in Nakhon Ratchasima Province part of a new Geopark.
