Nakhon Lampang Railway Station, Lampang

Nakhon Lampang Railway Station is located in Amphoe Muang, Lampang, 642.29 kilometers from Bangkok Railway Station. Built in 1915 during the reign of King Rama VI, the first train arrived on 1st April 1916, which was exactly Thai New Year during that time.

In those days, the director of Railway Department of Thailand was German. Initially, when a North Railway Line was set up, Nakhon Lampang Railway was the terminal station. The railway was the furthest spot on Suren road, around Ban Sob-Tui junction which links the first 3 roads in the Northern region of Thailand. Subsequently, rice farming around the suburb rapidly changed into city areas to support the population growth, and the city development. A tunnel ‘Khun Tan’ was dug up to pave the train route across the mountain to Nakhon Chiang Mai in 1921. Therefore, Nakhon Lampang became a center of goods transporting from Bangkok to the Northern region, and carryied necessary products from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. As a result, Ban Sob-Tui has become a prosperous business quarter.

Having endured a long history, Nakhon Lampang Railway Station has preserved its beautiful architectural heritage. The building is extraordinary, unlike other stations. To illustrate, it is a European-style structure with curve posts, and fretwork around door panels and door-window frames, which blends in with the Northern Thailand style and European style together. The station is a splendid rare-to-find Lanna-Colonial building. It is half wood-half concrete. The ground floor is of solid concrete, whereas; the upper floor is made of wood. Many Chinese-style houses lined up in front of the station still show its antique charm to the passerby. As a beautiful piece of European architecture, Nakhon Lampang Railway Station is the only railway station in Thailand that has stood tall for almost a century. Therefore, it has retained a heritage that has persisted in Lampang province for a long period of time.
