The shoreline along Phang Nga province's western coast was the worst affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami which struck on boxing day 2004. Several memorials have since been constructed including one at Ban Nam Khem. It was founded by the Thyssen Krupp Group to ensure the names of the many foreigners were included and not forgotten. The memorial was implimented by the Royal Thai Army.
