Pak Chong - 13 November 2025

It was an oversight on my part that when I booked my flight to Bangkok, I forgot that the day following my arrival would be awkward since Katoon had already planned a hospital appointment, which wouldn't have been a problem except that the hospital is two and a half hours away. This is due to family connections with this particular hospital. On the plus side, I'm using Thai time to get enough sleep, and I'm awake at 6.00 a.m. for departure an hour later. However, there is a delayed reaction, as I'm asleep in the car for most of the way, and then on arrival, I'm out for the count till lunch. In the meantime, Katoon receives treatment for a shoulder injury; it's then well into the afternoon before we check in at our pre-booked accommodation.
In the past we've stayed in Pak Chong many times and generally been disappointed with the rooms we've booked. It's clear that there is a premium to be paid for room quality here in this popular part of Thailand. Accordingly, we've paid more this time for the extra convenience and comfort at Pak Chong Center Poshtel, but there is breakfast included here.
Pak Chong Center Poshtel as the name suggests, is right in the centre of town directly opposite the night market. It seems a pity, but with what has been planned, we won't be needing that tonight. We settle into the room in the curiously terraced complex. The room is pleasant enough and spacious with a fridge and a kettle. The beds, though, don't seem that comfortable. A short rest takes us into late afternoon, and we might as well go exploring, first ending up at the train station. With no activity there, we head back, locating a barber's shop. I had waited for this opportunity to get a trim for a good price. Suitably shorn, I return through the market and back to the hotel. Here I can write up some notes until a call comes through. It's time for dinner.
I have to say that over the years there have been some delightful meals here in Pak Chong which is large enough to provide an amazing variety of dining opportunities, and today Katoon's sister and the doctor have selected a Japanese restaurant. Now this should be fun. This is one of the options I've little experience of. Accordingly, I leave the ordering to my hosts except that I do take a fancy to the katsu curry. When the selection of foods arrives, I can declare, 'Welcome back to Thailand Peter', The mainly seafood selection is accompanied by a large beer, and there's no mistaking the pleasant flavours that emanate only from Japan. It's all over too soon as we head back to the room.
