Paignton Day 2 - 27 October 2025

Today I'm still feeling the effects of that extra hour as the UK returns to GMT. Waking early, I just can't stay in bed and am soon on the computer. Breakfast seems a way off as I plan the day. I will head back to Brixham with the promise of better weather, this time taking the bus, Beyond that, I need to arrange to meet my son-in-law who is travelling down from Bristol for a break the same as me. But first, let's see what that breakfast is all about.
Already aware that I'm the only guest, I wonder how much the hosts will put themselves out just for me. I enter the dining rooms and the answer comes swiftly. Nothing is too much trouble. There is coffee, toast, juice and cereal followed by a traditional English breakfast that only the British can make. It's just perfect. The only downside is that the ritual has taken longer than expected, so without further delay I'm out to explore.
I head to the main road where I pick up Bus 12 for Brixham which wastes little time in getting there. It's so far so good as I find myself dropped off at the car park I used yesterday. I'm soon at the harbour but there, the good news ends. I'm no further forward than yesterday with activities shut down for the winter. Well, at least I tried. My attention now turns to my meeting with Leo and it appears that he is already at his destination which is nowhere near me right now. Having committed to the bus, which is free for me, I have no choice but to head back to Paignton. From there, there I could take the train to Teignmouth, further along the coast where Leo is waiting, Bus 12 terminates at Newton Abbot not too far from Teignmouth, That should work. I'm soon on my way back to Paignton, deciding to skip the train from there. Distance wise, the extra mileage doesn't seem a lot but I'm soon in trouble. I didn't know the 12 took in Torquay, a much bigger town as well. That doubles the time to Newton Abbot, By the time I reach the terminal, a whole morning has gone for nothing much to show for it.
In Newton Abbot, as least I waste no time in finding a connecting bus to Teignmouth. By the time I reach the coast again, Leo has been there for 2 hours. The bus pulls in at Teignmouth station where I meet up with Leo. There's nothing left for it than to head for the Jolie Brise pub. Two hours later we are still there, having an important conversation on family matters. The day has come and gone with nothing much achieved in terms of attractions visited. Still, this trip was never about that anyway.
It's time to plan the route back to Paignton and no way am I taking the bus. Unfortunately though I have to pay for that and grab a single train ticket for little less than a return. Making the call to buy a return from Paignton would have been much better. The day ends peacefully back at the guest house after a warmed up dinner.
