Paignton Day 1 - 26 October 2025

It's been a while since I've needed to add to my diary; I guess with the weather changing I just haven't had much enthusiasm to travel. It's also the case that I need a reason. I'm currently in a transition period between activity in the UK and that in Thailand where I plan to be in just a couple of weeks from now. In the meantime I'm making an effort and have booked two nights down in Devon during the off season. At least I have a chance to see some vintage trains.
It's Sunday morning and the clocks have just gone back so at least I get an extra hour to prepare to travel. The accommodation booked for tonight will take around three hours to reach, but I already have plans before that. I leave home around 9:45 a.m which should put me at my first stop perfectly around lunchtime. Fortunately, the traffic is light and I reach Dawlish around 12:30. With the West Coast Main Line passing through along one of the most iconic pieces of railway in the UK, it's obvious I need to pause here. The weather here is not ideal barely 12 or 13 Celsius but I'm prepared to hang around to capture some video footage that I can use on my YouTube channel. It's a coastline where the sea wall has been reconstructed in the last few years having been built in the Victorian era. How it survived the elements here for so long is a miracle. I manage to spend a good hour here but I need to crack on as my next destination is still another 45 minutes away and it's a bit opportunistic.
I head inland once more bypassing Paignton and find myself in Brixham parking up with easy reach of the harbour. I'm here to keep the door open to go fishing, but all I need is a rod and a boat. However, things are not quite what I expected especially today as the weather has moved in. I wouldn't particularly like to be out in a boat right now. With nothing decided, I just have a quick look around grab some chips and head back to the car. It's now just a question of a short trip back to Paignton. With the weather now so overcast, I'm hampered by the loss of internet connection and have to head to Paignton blind. Fortunately, that connection kicks back in as I approach the town and I'm able to locate my overnight accommodation with out difficulty.
At Clydesdale guest house I don't know what to expect as this is not the normal style of accommodation I use. Yet as I arrive I'm made most welcome buy the hosts. What's quite surprising, even now in low season is that I'm the only guest here. It seems that after I depart on Tuesday, the guesthouse will close temporarily for my hosts to take their Welcome Break. It's so welcoming that the first thing I'm offered is a cup of coffee then a checklist as to what I would like for breakfast. Yes, a full English breakfast is included in the price. As regards the room, it's a single of course, small but cosy. It is also functional and although I won't be taking advantage of it tonight the guesthouse is within walking distance of both the beach and the town itself. It seems that with the house to myself it's going to be a quiet night.
