Caen - 14 July 2025

We have been managing without a WiFi connection for a couple of days and have been relying on backup roaming since yesterday, but it seems I have missed a trick. There does seem to be a router in the room but there are no instructions in English and nobody to ask. It's another effect of lack of management on site.
It's the final full day in France and we need to head to our booked accommodation within easy reach of the port at Ouistreham. It's a relatively easy journey, although we decide not to use the tollways making the journey more complicated. After breakfast, we are ready for a departure at 10.00 am but I'm not done with the Loire just yet. I still have the chance to visit a winery but the issue today is that some are closed but why on a Monday? We head north and into Loire vineyards finally finding one that is open run by SAS Nathalie et David Drusse. I add a couple of bottles to my collection, the first from this region.
It's well after midday and the question of lunch arises. I decide to press on to Le Mans to take a break there, but there is a problem? It closes at 1.00 pm. Again I scratch my head as it's a Monday. Realising there is something going on in France today, we have to act fast. It's the last change we have to shop in France. It's a fight against time, but we do get a lunch which we eat on the way. We continue north into the Parc naturel regional du Perche, a huge forested area and I find a place to park.
Last night was very uncomfortable for sleeping after a very hot day and I allow myself a quick nap as my partner doesn't want to drive. That works and we're soon covering the last hour to our destination. Thankfully, we have GPS and that guides us around the busy city of Caen. It's all good as we arrive at Hotel Crocus Memorial to the northwest of the city.
Hotel Crocus Memorial is modern and clean, great for an overnight stop but I lament there is no kettle in the room. By complete contrast to last night, there is everything needed in reception and even a bar. That doesn't help us though as we have to leave early in the morning. We will have to improvise for that last night in France.
Having settled in, I can finally catch up with things on the net including Chelsea's magnificent win over PSG. I also manage to find out why there is a national holiday in France. Of course, it's Bastille Day, but having shop closures affecting the last two days here has caused much inconvenience. Tomorrow we wind this tour down.
