It's the start of the second week of our continental tour as we've finally reached the Perigord and a magnificent Bond location. It's just wonderful to pause after what has been an intense week, so much so that I'm still feeling the effects into this morning. However, a reasonable sleep was possible despite no air conditioning. In fact, this morning, it just clouded over with the chance of rain and a huge temperature drop compared with our time in Paris.
With the conveniences of our accommodation here at Constant we can enjoy the comforts of home cooking starting with breakfast then decide to stay in the property for lunch too.
Logically, we should go out and explore this afternoon but nothing happens after lunch until finally we decide to go for a short drive. Thinking we should head down to the Dordogne River and return along its banks, we first arrive at Limeuil, a village on a rocky out crop above the river. On approach, we get a magnificent view of this village, so typical of the Perigord. We park up and it's obvious we are not going anywhere soon as we head for the river then up the cobbled streets that time forgot.
Halfway between Bergerac and Sarlat, Limeuil is one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in France' and it's easy to see why with its arched doorways, dormer windows and stone tiled rooves. Winding its way from the old port area beside the river to the top of a hill, the village exudes a sense of history and timelessness, with well-preserved architecture reflecting its rich medieval past. Whether simply taking in the panoramic views at the top or relaxing below beside the river, it is an ideal spot to unwind in, all set in the most beautiful of natural surroundings.
We waste no time in exploring the handicraft shops, the panoramic gardens, the church of St Catherine and the Reclusou Arc while all around are exquisite limestone buildings typical of the Perigord.
So the idea of a drive-through has evaporated, as we're here a good hour and it's now late afternoon. I had in mind to do some shopping on the way back but of course, it's Sunday and the supermarkets are closed. There's no alternative but to head back to Constant armed with only photographs. Fortunately, we can just about manage for a meal but tomorrow we must put a shift in and get some sightseeing done. The day has been cool with rain about and it's expected to be the same tomorrow.
