Today I'm focussed on football again which has my undivided attention. It's a relatively short journey up to Thammasat University Campus where Bangkok United have a home game at 19.00.
After an early dinner at Thanommit Market, we head through Bangkok evening traffic taking the route along the Phahonyothin Road arriving at the campus with not much time to spare. We need to park up and buy tickets and don't make the opening 2 minutes, but seating isn't an issue.
The massive stadium can swallow up any crowd including supporters of local rivals BG Pathum United who are the visitors today.
The season is nearing it's close and for most teams there is only pride to play for. It was looking like that was going to be the case today, but the league leaders, Buriram have hit a patch of poor form. Although unlikely, Bangkok United could still be champs statistically. However, their opponents to today are in good form and secure in 3rd place. It promises to be an intriguing game.
When the game kicks off there is a settling in period as both teams get into a rhythm matching each other in the opening spell, but the stalemate is broken in the 34th minute when the home team get on the scoresheet with a goal by Serbian Luka Adžić. It remains 1 : 0 to Bangkok with BG Pathum unable to find a way back into the game.
Into the 2nd half things are unchanged with the visitors stifled by a stubborn defence, but gradually a class difference emerges and a highly motivated Bangkok grab a second goal as they are awarded a penalty with a player brought down in the box, Omani Muhsen Al Ghassani with the spot kick. Then in the 78th minute they have a goal disallowed after a VAR review. It's one way traffic now but on 90 minutes it's still 2 : 0 but there are around 10 minutes of stoppage time and hardly any of that is needed as Bangkok have the ball in the back of the visitor's net again but lose out to a VAR review for a second time. It's a frantic end to the game as Bangkok pile on the pressure when they don't need to. Finally, they get a 3rd goal with 8 minutes of added time used, this time winning a VAR check, Thitipan Puangchan the scorer.
BG Pathum will feel the pain after this game; they haven't played well, but the late intensity from Bangkok could well be explained by the news from the Dragon Studium (Ratchaburi) that Buriram has lost, setting up a huge final weekend. However, looking at both team's fixtures, it's hard to see Buriram failing to record yet another championship.
