For Valentine's Day it's appropriate to go out for an evening meal and I suggest heading to the coast to a location we know well. Bang Pu has a lovely restaurant on the pier with the added attraction of birds; lots of them. This time of year, seagulls have migrated south from Siberia and as dusk falls, the air is filled with gulls as they come to roost on the mudflats. However, the journey to the coast will not be easy, especially on a Friday night. It's important to leave plenty of time.
We leave before 3 pm and that should allow time for me to call at Samsung in Fashion Island to complete the set-up of my new A25 I brought from the UK. That doesn't take long and I have another stop in mind on the way to the coast. However, I have to be careful of the time.
We arrive at Hua Takhe Railway Station but not before being held up at a level crossing where a freight train is about to pass. This is frustrating as just a few minutes earlier I could have been at the station to record it pass through. The whole reason for the diversion is the hope of seeing some freight. All I can do now is check the board, but the next service doesn't arrive until after 5 pm. I decide to wait. Now things are really tight. The service train passes through and I must be gone but a station safety announcement confirms another freight train arriving, this time heading for the container yard at Lat Krabang. I have to wait as redemption for the one I missed earlier. By the time this train passes, it's 5.15. It's now an hour to the coast and things can still work but mysteriously my partner overrides the GPS and discovers chaos on the roads. We will not reach the coast before dark going this way. Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. Katoon and the GPS navigation system are not the best of friends. At this point I have to calm down and consider other options. I figure that the birds won't stop flying while it's still winter and seafood won't stop appearing on plates, so I cancel the trip. I frantically search for an alternative and soon come up with 'The Fish House' in Thap Yao about 10 minutes away.
The Fish House, of course, offers seafood and is at least as good as at Bang Pu. This compromise provides a far more comfortable experience to celebrate Valentine's Day and will be less stressful for the return expected to last around 40 minutes.
Well, things have ended without disaster today, but we have both been guilty of miscalculations which need correction. I plan to schedule another trip down to Bang Pu later and visit Wat Asokaram too, a temple missed off a previous visit and now missed a second time. There are no time pressures and that is the main thing.
